The North Face Stormbreak 2 Tent Review

Lets go ahead and dig into the North Face Stormbreak 2 tent review. I’m going to start with the setup and move on to the tent itself. We will talk a little about the dimensions and overall if it’s the tent we pick more often than not.

The North Face Stormbreak 2 Tent Setup

This is probably my favorite part of the North Face Stormbreak 2. It’s incredibly easy and quick to set up. It only has 4 poles and 2 of them are only a couple feet long. You simply criss cross the large poles form corner to corner and use the smaller poles to expand the width of the tent. It’s really easy and two of us can get it totally put up in about 5 minutes.

The rain fly is nice as well. It actually secures under the anchor with the tent poles so you don’t have to steak it around the entire tent. You know that at least 4 of the corners should stay anchored to the ground. The rain fly also has a strap so you can tighten it down without moving the stake, this has really come in handy and is a neat feature.

You can see the rain fly and actual tent pole attach in the corner.
Once you get the rain fly connected to the 4 corners you use your tent stakes to stake down the other parts of the rain fly and your done. It’s super easy to put up and you will have it done in just a few minutes.

I have a video you can watch below that shows the North Face Stormbreak 2 tent setup and review. We break it down and show you the tent!

Functionality & Features

Another great feature that we really appreciate is the double doors. It’s really nice to be able to exit out the side of the tent your on, if you want. If you get up earlier than the other person or need to get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, you don’t have to crawl over the other person in the tent. We really use this feature and it’s great being able to have your own door.

One thing that’s really disappointing with this tent is that it doesn’t have any storage or hooks to hang stuff. It seems like a common sense feature for most tents to include a hanger or net at the top to either hang a light or stash your keys/phone. It’s strange that The North Face didn’t want to include anything like that on the inside. This thing alone is one of the main reasons we typically go with the Kelty Salida 2 instead of the North Face Stormbreak 2.

We really like the straps on the rain fly to adjust without moving your stakes. This is a feature that makes it really convenient to hunger the tent down when the rain is coming down. There is also a space in the front of the tent you can stash your bag or shoes to keep them dry and out of the rain. This is actually where our dogs lay when we are backpacking.

The backpack is pretty light. The full weight is 5 lbs 14 oz. with a fastpack weight of 3 lbs 14 oz.  We have backpacked with this tent for a few years before getting our Kelty Salida 2. It was plenty light enough and served us very well. The rain fly works well and will keep you dry in a storm. We had a couple of downpours where we stayed pretty dry.

The total floor area is 30.56 feet or 87×50 inches. It is about 43 inches high at the peak height. You can compact it down to about 7×22 inches. Which makes it pretty easy to either tie to or stuff inside your backpack.

Durability

The North Face Stormbreak 2, two person backpacking tent is actually pretty well made. We have had the tent for about 7 years and have never had anything break or tear. It’s been used a lot over the years and I’m surprised that we have never had a problem.

Although the stakes are not the greatest, they have held up well over the years. They are fine but not the best I have seen. Even with that being said however, they have stood the test of time and use.

The tent itself is well made and I know this because I have used it for so long. I have used cheap tents that aren’t made well in the past and this one is pretty good. The stakes aren’t great but they will more that suffice.

Final Thoughts

Honestly, if you are looking for a tent in this price range I give the slight edge to the Kelty Salida 2. I own the North Face Stormbreak 2 and the Kelty and they are both great tents. But the edge definitely goes to the Kelty.

If you are a fan of the North Face or you just need to have a tent that matches your sweat shirt or hat, you won’t be unhappy with the North Face Stormbreak 2. The tent is incredibly durable and has always kept us dry and warm out of the elements. Even though I give the edge to Kelty, this is a great little tent and you won’t be upset you purchased it.

I actually have a video where we compare the two tents, you can see it below.
